Golf courses as safe havens for wildlife and biodiversity

Golf courses are often perceived to be detrimental to nature. Last week, Dr Jacinta Humphrey, RMIT University, published an article in The Conversation offering a different point of view.

Dr Humphrey explains that the pockets of vegetation between the main grassy areas of golf courses — also known as the “rough” — are often home to a diversity of native plant species. This can provide native animals with important resources such as food, shelter and tree hollows for nesting.

Water bodies located on golf courses, such as lakes and ponds, also provide habitat for various species such as aquatic birds, frogs, fish and insects. The regular supply of water through irrigation systems and lack of human activity outside of golfing hours further adds to the attraction for wildlife.

It is important to note that there are downsides of golf courses for nature as well. For example, they can be home to many pest species such as toads and rats. Pesticides and fertilisers can negatively impact soil and water quality, while regular mowing of golf courses can reduce insect diversity.

Dr Humphrey concludes with suggestions on how golf courses can be better managed with biodiversity in mind including bushland restoration, wildlife corridors and reducing the use of harsh chemicals.
