ICON Science Visits The Cape: Biodiversity Sensitive Urban Design in Action

After years of championing Biodiversity Sensitive Urban Design (BSUD) in new housing developments, the ICON Science team finally had the opportunity to visit a project that has transformed that vision into a reality. Last Friday, we travelled to Cape Paterson to explore The Cape – an environmental net-gain development that seamlessly integrates biodiversity conservation, energy efficiency, integrated water management, and community-driven food production, all powered by renewable solar energy.

Biodiverse vegetation provides shade, cooling and ample habitat and resources for native fauna.


A Development That Prioritises Nature

Once complete, The Cape will comprise 232 homes, with more than half the site dedicated to open greenspace and habitat for native wildlife. Walking through the estate, it became immediately clear that this is no ordinary housing development.

The streetscapes were full of vegetation, but no monoculture lawn nature strips in sight!


What Impressed Us Most

Our team was genuinely inspired by the thoughtful design choices throughout the project:

  • Native vegetation everywhere: The streetscapes, parks, gardens, and swales are full of diverse native plants – particularly shrubs and mid-storey species that are so often overlooked in urban and suburban planning.
  • Water as a design tool: Clever water management supports natural ecosystems (including 148 bird species!), creates biodiversity riparian corridors, and sustains productive community vegetable gardens.
  • Innovative seating solutions: Gabion seating covered in vegetation provides comfortable resting spots for both residents and wildlife.
  • Thoughtful dog facilities: A double-fenced off-lead dog park with water play and designated quiet zones, whilst the rest of the estate maintains lead requirements – balancing the needs of our four-legged friends with wildlife protection.
  • Ecological connectivity: The absence of front fences allows native species to move freely between dedicated nature areas and resident gardens.
  • Respect for wildlife: The development team even relocated a walking path after discovering it was a daytime resting spot for a mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos.
  • Food security: Self-sufficient Foodcubes supply private homes and support the Community Farm in producing fresh local produce year-round.
  • Passionate leadership: The dedication and vision of the team behind The Cape – particularly Brendan Condon – has been instrumental to the project’s success.

Beautiful native vegetation is found all throughout the development, often accompanied by woody debris, rocks and water sources for wildlife.

The fenced dog park has two sets of gates to prevent dogs escaping and is full of tunnels, water play areas and open spaces to relax or chase a ball.

The development is home to biodiverse wetlands that form a riparian corridor with different wetting and drying cycles. Latham’s Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) have been recorded here!

The public seating in the development is incredibly unique, made of a gabion section that is often covered by climbing or creeping vegetation – the perfect spot for a skink to snooze (or for Sarah to take a seat).


A Blueprint for Australia’s Future

The Cape demonstrates that BSUD can be delivered affordably and at scale. If this development can achieve it, there’s no reason why other housing projects across Australia shouldn’t follow suit. The time for green, biodiverse, and sustainable housing developments is now.
